Pig Breeding Agency
Speaker: Claire HASSENFRATZ, Master Degree in Agriculture, asp@asp.asso.fr
IFIP 鈥 French institute for pig and pork industry is an organization to help and advise pig farming and the pig industry. This national technical institute leads:
- applied research and studies to produce knowledge
- advisory , consultancy, training, extension, training to transfer knowledge.
IFIP is divided into four departments in order to cover the pork chain: pig breeding, economy, meat quality and pig farming.
The pig breeding department is involved in breeding calculation (BLUP), test station monitoring, breeding consultancy, breeding goals and new technologies (DNA bank, QTL and genomic).
The Pig Breeding Agency is a part of the IFIP Pig Breeding Department.
The Pig Breeding Agency, established in 1994 as a joint initiative of professionals and national authorities, brings together the various operators in the French swine genetics sector:
The agency is representative of more than 99% of the reproducers in the French swine genetics sector.
- All the Pig Breeding Organisations approved by the French Ministry of Agriculture to produce pure-bred or hybrid animals and/or maintain herd books or zootechnical registers. The member organisations of the agency account over 99% of sows in selection and in multiplication.
- Swine Artificial Insemination Centres approved by the French Ministry of Agriculture to collect, condition, store and distribute semen from boars of different approved genetic types.
- The national federations representing pig production (cooperation and trade associations), which express the point of view of the users of breeders and semen.
The agency is assigned missions by the French Ministry of Agriculture.
On request by and under the authority of the Ministry of Agriculture, the agency carries out various missions related to the regulations. In particular, the agency has the mission of conducting various actions related to the approvals delivered by the Ministry to the pig breeding organisations, herd books and zootechnical registers, indispensable for exporting animals. Among the obligations involved by the maintenance of approval, the Pig Breeding Organisations have to participate in genetic level assessment including the test of terminal products resulting from combinations of approved parental genetics types. This test, carried out under the authority of the Ministry of Agriculture, provides official references on the growth, carcass and meat quality performances of porkers produced by different combinations of approved genetic types. An other obligation is to contribute to the annual numerical productivity references of parent sows produced by the approved Pig Breeding Organisations. These references supply indicators on the prolificacy and reproductive performance of these parent sows.
All those official surveys allow to collect objective and reliable data on the efficiency of the French breeding choice offered to the producers.
The organisation of this seminar was made possible by financial support from the OFFICE DE L'ELEVAGE (National Office for Meat and Dairy Products) Website : http://www.office-elevage.fr/ On this website you will find data about French agriculture and pig chain, in a Chinese version.
